PASSION AND UNDERSTANDING
Off The Ropes was created as a result of a shared passion in the sport of boxing and an understanding of the benefits that the discipline can create in young people and adults.
The sessions address the underlying and complex mental health problems in London and Kent, offering a holistic approach programme addressing some of the following underlying causes:
POOR EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS
Our sessions help participants develop discipline, time management, teamwork, and communication — all key traits employers value. We also incorporate practical guidance to prepare individuals for the workplace with improved confidence and purpose.
MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
Boxing provides a physical and emotional outlet, helping participants process trauma, reduce anxiety, and manage stress. Coupled with mental health support, our programme promotes resilience and emotional regulation.
LOW SELF-ESTEEM
Through achievable goals and positive reinforcement, participants begin to see their own worth. As skills improve and personal progress is recognised, self-esteem is naturally rebuilt, one round at a time.
LOW CONFIDENCE
Stepping into the ring is a powerful metaphor — it takes courage, focus, and belief. Our programme nurtures that belief, encouraging individuals to push boundaries and realise their inner strength.
SELF-HARM
We offer a safe and supportive space where emotional pain can be channelled constructively. Boxing becomes a coping mechanism — a healthier, empowering alternative to self-harm.
OBESITY
Our physically active sessions help participants adopt healthier lifestyles. With encouragement and structure, individuals begin to build fitness, lose weight, and gain pride in their bodies and capabilities.
LOW EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT
We create a learning environment that’s engaging and accessible, helping participants develop focus, discipline, and a growth mindset that can translate into better educational outcomes.
POOR INTERPERSONAL/SOCIAL SKILLS
Boxing classes promote teamwork, communication, and mutual respect. Through shared challenges and successes, participants learn to connect with others, resolve conflict, and build meaningful relationships.

Our story
FROM “IN YOUR CORNER”TO “OFF THE ROPES”
Founded in 2014 by psychiatrist Patrick Davey and occupational therapist Warren Dunkley, In Your Corner uses boxing to improve mental and physical wellbeing. Together with long-time boxing partner Ashley Newman and Swanley Boxing, they created a programme that delivers non-contact boxing sessions across London and Kent. Led by qualified boxing and mental health professionals, these sessions support young people and adults in schools, hospitals, rehabs, and communities — helping participants manage mental health challenges and build life skills.
